“Slim on plot and characterization, but the visuals more than make up for it.”

That’s the Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus, and I’d tattoo it on the film if I could. Is Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow DieselPunk? Obviously. It’s 1930s New York, giant robots, strange flying machines, and a reporter dragging a pilot into a missing-scientists case.

The film was shot digitally on Sony 24p CineAlta cameras, then put out to film, and now Shout advertises the 4K as a transfer from the 35 mm digital negative. Run the chain: digital camera, film-out, digital negative, 4K disc. That’s a long way from the camera for a label that says 4K, and I’d call the label honest about the disc and polite about everything before it.

The consensus calls the plot slim, and I’ll take that trade every time. A whole 1930s built to be looked at, with giant robots striding through New York, is the reason I sit down for a DieselPunk film at all, and the spectacle is the appeal.

Shout Factory released a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo on May 27, 2025, with Dolby Vision. Blu-ray.com’s reviewer rated the 4K video 5 out of 5 and called it “breathtaking”. It’s out now, at a list price of $27.99, and for that package I call it a good deal.

ΩΩΩΩ. WIN.
