Next weekend, September 11-12, downtown Fergus, Ontario gets the full SteamPunk treatment. Cogs & Clockwork is back for its 4th annual run, and the lineup is not playing around: Steam Powered Giraffe headlines with ticketed shows at the Fergus Grand Theatre Friday and Saturday nights, fresh off their stint at Weekend at the Asylum. Professor Elemental and Johnny Sprocket from The Cog is Dead are also on the bill. That is, frankly, an embarrassing amount of talent for one Victorian street festival and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.

The daytime events are free, which is the correct price for robot races, teapot races, tea dueling, puppet shows, circus performers, a toy boat race, a scavenger hunt, and a chess match against an actual international chess master. Fashion shows and artist demos round it out on Provost Lane. And yes, there is a festival-exclusive red ale called Clockwork Rouge being poured at The Outpost taproom all weekend. A steampunk festival with its own bespoke beer is operating at a level the Doctor fully endorses. High-5, Fergus.

Fergus is about 100km west of Toronto, and the timing is cleverly staged the weekend before the Amherstburg festival, so if you are the kind of person who chain-runs steampunk events across Ontario (you know who you are, you glorious disaster), this is your double-header. A free outdoor steampunk festival in a historic Ontario town near Detroit, running September 18 through 20: gears, top hats, axe throwing, teapot racing, a wizard academy, a steampunk opera, and a comedian who bills himself as “40 Minutes of Danger and Dad Jokes.” The Doctor has read that sentence three times and it keeps getting better. They even laid on free bus service so you have zero excuses, including the classic “I can’t get there” excuse that you’ve been rehearsing since 2019.

Amherstburg is one of those towns where the Victorian architecture does half the work for you, which is exactly how the Omega7Red Formulae likes it: apply it to a place that already looks the part and you get something genuinely Uncommon. Cosplay in your finest steampunk or wizardry kit, challenge an international chess master, watch a live mural go up, and cap the night with fireworks. Most of it is free. FREE. The only thing standing between you and a weekend of this is your own lack of ambition, and frankly that’s a you problem.

August isn’t done with us yet. The Steampunk Explorer’s North America calendar shows a steampunk festival dropping in Coldwater, Ontario on August 29, and then the whole thing turns into a cavalcade: Hannibal, Missouri (September 4-7), Fergus, Ontario (September 11-12), Colfax, California (September 12-13). The brass horde is mobilizing on multiple fronts simultaneously. The Doctor approves of this level of coordination.

If you’re anywhere near the Great Lakes corridor and you DON’T have Coldwater on your radar, that’s a personal failing I cannot fix for you. Ontario in late August is legitimately gorgeous, and the idea of gears and goggles against the backdrop of cottage country is the kind of thing the Omega7Red Formulae practically writes itself for. Go. Wear the hat. You know which hat.

It’s the 5th of May, and if you live in Mexico, you probably don’t care as Cinco de Mayo isn’t really observed there.  However, if you live in the US, then Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate the culture and experiences of Americans of Mexican ancestry.  However, as you enjoy your food, music, and folkloric dancing, keep in mind the origin of the holiday.  May 5th, 1862 – The Battle of Puebla, where the outnumbered Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army.
