Tomorrow, September 12th, downtown Colfax, California transforms into a living SteamPunk postcard, and it’s completely free. Colfax Railroad Days 2026 celebrates the town’s pivotal role as the primary supply terminus during construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, which is exactly the kind of history the Omega7Red Formulae was practically invented to describe. Steam-era industry, dangerous mountain terrain, rival railroad empires racing toward a golden spike: if that isn’t SteamPunk origin lore, I don’t know what is.

The lineup is not messing around: model train displays, a Union Pacific heritage exhibit, a working blacksmith shop, living history re-enactors, the Black Flag Gang and the Pinkertons doing Wild West theatrical performances, free trackless train rides, craft vendors, a beer garden, and a quilt show. (Yes, a quilt show. Don’t laugh. Victorian craftsmanship is on-brand and you know it.) The Sacramento Steampunk Society has run an encampment here in past years with a British Expedition tent, a Traveling Egyptian Exhibition, and a Nautilus Expedition, because of course they did. The Doctor approves, high-5.

If you’re within driving distance of Placer County, roughly 50 miles northeast of Sacramento, there is zero excuse not to show up. Goggles optional but obviously correct. Nothing can beat old age and betrayal, but a working blacksmith and a free beer garden comes close.

A free outdoor steampunk festival in a historic Ontario town near Detroit, running September 18 through 20: gears, top hats, axe throwing, teapot racing, a wizard academy, a steampunk opera, and a comedian who bills himself as “40 Minutes of Danger and Dad Jokes.” The Doctor has read that sentence three times and it keeps getting better. They even laid on free bus service so you have zero excuses, including the classic “I can’t get there” excuse that you’ve been rehearsing since 2019.

Amherstburg is one of those towns where the Victorian architecture does half the work for you, which is exactly how the Omega7Red Formulae likes it: apply it to a place that already looks the part and you get something genuinely Uncommon. Cosplay in your finest steampunk or wizardry kit, challenge an international chess master, watch a live mural go up, and cap the night with fireworks. Most of it is free. FREE. The only thing standing between you and a weekend of this is your own lack of ambition, and frankly that’s a you problem.

Whitby Steampunk Weekend XX descends on Whitby, North Yorkshire, July 24-26, 2026, turning the seaside town Bram Stoker used as his personal horror-writing backdrop into something Stoker himself would have found delightfully unhinged: thousands of costumed steampunks doing costumed promenades along the clifftops, a 70-plus-stall Retail Emporium packed with handcrafted curiosities, live music, workshops, and educational presentations, all inside the Whitby Pavilion. Free daytime entry. Family friendly. The past is always in the future, apparently, and in Whitby it is also apparently wearing a very elaborate hat.

Seriously though: free, accessible, and set in a town with a ruined abbey looming over the harbor and a Dracula connection baked into the postcode? That is either the best-scouted convention venue in the genre or the most [expletive deleted] obvious one, and either way the Doctor gives full credit. If you are anywhere near North Yorkshire in late July and you are not already packing your goggles and your best brass-fitted waistcoat, I genuinely do not know what you are doing with your life. Nothing can beat old age and betrayal, but Whitby Steampunk Weekend at least gives you something worth staying alive for.
