Boston’s Steampunk Gathering: Charlestown, September 18-20

Steampunk costumed attendees at an outdoor festival in a historic New England waterfront setting

This weekend, Charlestown, Massachusetts transforms into the Doctor’s kind of town: gears on everything, corsets as far as the eye can see, and enough top hats to block out the sun. Boston’s recurring monthly steampunk gathering goes big for its September outing, September 18 through 20, with a mostly free outdoor festival and a handful of ticketed events for those who want to go deeper. That’s three days. THREE. The Omega7Red Formulae salutes the ambition.

Charlestown is already a historically loaded backdrop (you know, the Navy Yard, the USS Constitution, the general aura of “we have been doing things here since forever”), so dropping a steampunk festival into it is less of a stretch and more of a natural state of being. If you’re within striking distance of Boston this weekend and you don’t at least swing by, I don’t know what to tell you. Nothing can beat old age and betrayal, but passing on a free steampunk festival in one of the coolest waterfront neighborhoods in New England is at least a close third.
